Once Were Warriors

If serious off-roading is a passion and wanting to have a new car warranty is high on the must have list, the Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior might just be for you.

The Warrior is based on Nissan’s Navara however it has spent some time at Nissan Australia’s core engineering partner Premcar in Victoria to create tough flagship models. They are tailor-made to suit harsh Aussie conditions and given some aesthetic upgrades.

Although being through a massive upgrade, the Warrior retains its safety systems which include Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Driver Alertness, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, Blind Spot Warning, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention and an Intelligent Around View Monitor, including an Off-Road Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Some technology is also included with the Navara’s 7.0-inch Advanced Drive-Assist instrument cluster display, along with a high-contrast 8.0-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The automatic transmission includes Navara’s Drive Mode Selector, with Sport, Off-Road, Tow and Normal modes.

Powering the Warrior is the 2.3-litre common-rail four-cylinder twin-turbo-diesel, producing 140kW and 450Nm from as low as 1500rpm. Towing capacity is rated at 3.5 tonnes braked.

The extra work Nissan and Premcar have done include a winch-compatible Safari-style bulbar and integrated light bar, Warrior-specific towbar, Navara branded red bash plate and a 3mm steel second stage under body protection plate, Cooper Discoverer All Terrain tyres with increased tread depth, increased ground clearance, from 220m to 260mm, revised suspension with new spring rates, Warrior headrest embroidery and much more.

With all these add-ons, the steering becomes slightly heavier, and the tyres are noisier on the road. This is to be expected with the upgrades although when off-road the upgrades come into their own.

The Warrior handles the rough stuff and can be pushed that little further than most and it can take a few big hits. Premcar have done well in making the Warrior a ready to go 4WD and will suit most who want to have some fun on the beach or in the forest.

The automatic starts at $69,990 plus on-road costs and given it is packed with almost all you need to get out of town, the Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior punches the value for money card just right.
