A four-week Logan program is helping young people construct career pathways while addressing critical skills shortages in the construction industry.
A successful workforce development program in Logan is helping young people lay the foundations for future careers while addressing ongoing skills shortages in the construction industry.
The second Lay the Way program has recently wrapped up, with nine participants completing the four-week pre-employment initiative designed to introduce young people to careers in brick and block laying.
Delivered by Brick and Block Careers in partnership with industry, training and community organisations, the program combines hands-on experience, industry exposure and employability training to create genuine pathways into the workforce.
Participants completed a range of accredited and non-accredited training modules covering workplace safety, practical construction skills and job readiness before progressing to paid work trials with local employers.
Brick and Block Careers Queensland and Regional Manager Carly Buckland said the program was about much more than teaching bricklaying skills.
“Programs like Lay the Way are about much more than introducing young people to bricklaying – they’re about building confidence, creating opportunity and helping participants see a future they may not have previously considered,” Ms Buckland said.
“For many of these young people, employment pathways can feel out of reach. By bringing together the right support, training and industry connections, we’re helping create real and sustainable outcomes.”
A key factor in the program’s success has been strong collaboration between industry and community partners.
Participants were given a behind-the-scenes look at the construction supply chain through a manufacturing plant tour provided by Brickworks, while donated materials helped support the practical training component.
The program was also delivered from the Twin Rivers Centre, which provided facilities and support throughout the initiative.
