Pull on your gloves and begin digging in the dirt – you’ll love the payoff!

Winter may feel like a quiet time in the garden, but with a bit of forward planning, it’s the perfect season to plant hardy native shrubs that will reward you with vibrant blooms come spring.

Native Australian plants are low-maintenance and water-wise. But, it’s best to choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and avoid using high-phosphorus fertilisers. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppresses weeds.

Choose your plants

The Grevillea features sculptural foliage and striking flowers. They are favourites for their long flowering periods and ability to attract nectar-loving birds.

The Callistemon or bottlebrush. Hardy and drought-tolerant species like Callistemon citrinus will bloom in spring

The Leptospermum or tea tree offers delicate blossoms and aromatic foliage; it’s both ornamental and practical, supporting bees and other pollinators.

For smaller gardens or borders, Crowea with its star-shaped pink flowers appearing in late winter, will  brighten the landscape.
