Winter Bloomers: Colourful Flowers to Brighten Chilly Days

Just because the temperature drops doesn’t mean your garden has to go grey. In fact, winter is prime time for some of the prettiest, most vibrant blooms to strut their stuff—and many are perfect for pots or garden beds alike.

Violas, pansies, snapdragons, petunias, calendulas and alyssum are winter winners in South East Queensland. Their bright faces and rich colours bring a cheerful touch to the cooler months, and best of all, they’re easy to grow.

Soil prep is key. Whether you’re planting in pots or in the ground, start with good drainage. In the garden, dig in some compost and aged manure to enrich the soil and help it retain moisture without becoming soggy. For pots, use a premium potting mix—look for one with a red ‘tick’ to ensure quality.

Feeding and care: Once your flowers are in, give them a liquid feed every two to three weeks to keep them blooming happily. Choose a flower-promoting fertiliser with potassium to boost bud formation. Deadhead (pinch off) spent blooms regularly to encourage more flowers, and water in the morning to prevent fungal problems.

Winter sun is gentle, but your plants still need it—aim for at least four to six hours of light a day. In very cold snaps, pots can be moved to a more sheltered spot if needed.

So, whether you’ve got a sprawling backyard or just a sunny windowsill, there’s no reason your garden can’t be bursting with colour this winter. Pick your favourites, plant with love, and enjoy the vibrant charm of a blooming cool-season garden.
