What new year resolutions are you going to make for your gardening activities? Have you given any consideration to what you might dream of achieving this year in your little plot of land.
Have you a new year’ s resolution for your garden this year? How consistent are your dreams, do they match reality?
Do you often start something in your garden, but don’t follow through with regular watering, fertiliser or pest regime or do you just hope that the plants will grow by themselves? We all do it!
Sometimes, it’s hard to be consistent, but unfortunately one has to be on top, all the time when one gardens. It’s no good saying, “I’ll get that grub off my grapes tomorrow when I’ve got more time”.
He’s probably got dozens of friends that were invited to the party that night.
Tomorrow will be too late! (I’ve seen a small grapevine laid bare in one night).
Maybe you can invest in some New Year’s resolutions; Things like a new bird feeder, build a compost bin, or buy some decent secateurs that aren’t rusty. Or even share some seeds with your neighbour.
Maybe, if you grow pineapples, as I’ve mentioned in previous columns from time to time, they really are the lazy gardeners’ best friend. They need very little looking after and are so easy to grow, however it does take time.
Pineapples will take a few years at least to grow and one day out of the blue, some vivid red and purple coloring shows in the middle of the plant and in a few days that little bundle of juice will begin to grow.
Then it starts to get interesting. Some small slips or pups start to grow out of the stem or leaves and when these are about 150mm high, can be screwed off and planted and now you have maybe two three or even four new plants to put into pots.
Don’t forget to add the top of the pineapple when ripe and now, instead of one plant you have up to five now. So within three short years, you could in reality have 15
pineapples growing and compounding. A third produce fruit each year.
From there, as many as you have room to grow. Your field of dreams!
The ‘Lazy Gardener’, wishes all readers a safe and productive new year.
Till next time.
