Are you a gambler?
When you really think about it, most of us are in some form or other. Be it the horses, pokies, Keno, sports, stocks and shares or any other form of recognised gambling.
Most of it is innocent fun, “to take a chance” on lotto or Powerball, Maybe we hope for the big win, but how many of us know full well that there is so little chance of any money being won. Maybe except for a few lucky people, who sometimes, don't know what to do with their new found wealth, squander their winnings.
You might say that you don't gamble on those pursuits, but everyday you gamble, or take a chance, maybe subconsciously, on many aspects in your life.
Making arrangements for tonight's dinner or sometime in the future, your next holiday, or even booking next years trip away.
All this is assuming that you will be around to participate in what was planned.
True! Most of it comes off as we planned though, thanks to that little thought that all will be well at this time.
You know every time we get in our car to drive somewhere we gamble that we're going to arrive safely. They say a lot of accidents happen just five minutes from home, perhaps we let our guard down when we are close to home.
(What about the Irishman who bought a house 30km away because he heard that accidents sometime happen within 20km of home!)
Our complete trust must be in our pilots when we fly around the country, we can't grab the steering wheel if something were to go wrong. We put a lot of trust in these people that have our lives in their hands. Doctors are only people with a greater knowledge about a certain conditions and we have to trust, or is it gamble, on their proficiency. The same applies to many aspects of our lives. We wake of a morning, We hardly think about any consequences that may arise. What about being given that dose of anaesthetic that allows us to quickly fall asleep so that we know nothing of an operation, do we trust the anaesthetist that they know what they are doing.
As human beings we often go through life, not realising that we all gamble, (well sort of) but maybe it's the wrong word, maybe 'trust' when it comes to ourselves, and 'gambling' when it comes to external matters. Can we separate the two?
'Gambling' is the betting or staking of something of value, with consciousness of risk and hope of gain. ( Or is that investing?)
An add on Sports gambling on TV says “odds are you're about to lose'. How true!
Gambling reflects peoples faith in chance rather than in providence.
Whereas 'trust' in life overcomes fear and allows us to live our lives completely without fear. Although 'to trust' is risky and we are often vulnerable in a number of situations. Just think of the scams that are perpetrated on vulnerable senior members in our society. But it seems that the more we trust the farther we are able to venture.
'Trust' allows us to have meaningful connections, it allows us to believe in people who may be responsible for our care and well being.
