Owner and Founder of OzCapture Snake Relocations Ozzie Lawrence is the man in the know when it comes to those slithering characters of our great wide land.
Logan Local spoke with him again on the business of relocations and his quest for public education.
“My relocation numbers are up but that’s only because of business growth rather than because of extra snakes,” he said.
“One day I did ten snake relocations – three eastern browns, two red bellies, two carpet snakes, one common green snake and one white crown.”
He is passionate about these animals and works with a couple of other catchers while also running his own business.
In an industry working with a range of species he is frequently called out to relocate eastern browns – regarded as Australia’s most dangerous and venomous snake.
He was straight up about his avoiding lose calls with the eastern brown.
“Remain vigilant and never complacent. It’s always different!”
“For example, an eastern brown on a day in the middle of summer is going to be stinking hot and extra defensive. He will go you all day.
“On another day, with an eastern brown I relocated he was sitting in water and could have been there for potentially twenty-four hours and didn’t have much energy, so he was lethargic and easy to work with.
He said at the end of the day snakes are the balance of natural state of order and without them our ecosystem would be left in complete turmoil.
“One carpet python is a lot better than twenty rats in your roof. Snakes are the only natural pest control – absolutely no chemicals.
“It all comes down to education and I have been able to really talk some customers around, especially with non-venomous types to keep the animal at the house or relocate them to the back of a property rather than take them away from their surroundings and food source.
“By taking it away it will more than likely return, and risk being run over or someone taking a shovel to it.”
