Growing Community One Harvest at a Time

How a retired farmer’s thriving garden is helping neighbours connect, share and flourish at BlueCare Yurana Retirement Village.

AT BlueCare Yurana Retirement Village, Roger Armstrong is growing far more than vegetables.

What began as a simple gardening project has blossomed into a thriving community hub where fresh produce, friendly conversations and neighbourly generosity are all part of the harvest.

Since moving into the village last year, Roger has transformed an overgrown patch of land into a productive fruit and vegetable garden bursting with seasonal produce. Passionfruit vines climb overhead; herbs fill garden beds and fresh vegetables are regularly picked and shared among residents.

For Roger, who spent much of his life farming, getting his hands back into the soil felt natural.

“I couldn’t plant a thing when I arrived,” he said.

“By October, I’d cleared out what shouldn’t have been there, and then through October and November I got stuck in and built it all up.”

The transformation has been remarkable.

Today, the garden is not only producing food but creating opportunities for connection. Residents regularly stop by to admire the latest harvest, swap gardening tips or simply enjoy a chat while Roger tends to his plants.

His passionfruit crop has developed something of a local following.

“People put their names down for it,” Roger laughed.

The fresh herbs, leafy greens and citrus fruits are also eagerly shared throughout the village, finding their way into home-cooked meals and helping neighbours feel connected through the simple pleasure of sharing something grown with care.

For Roger and his wife, village life has offered more than just a comfortable home. It has provided the chance to enjoy nature, pursue personal interests and become part of a close-knit community.

“My wife and I love it here,” Roger said.

“The animals and the birds and the bush — it’s beautiful. The kookaburras sit on the roof and the wallabies come out in the afternoon and just lie around. It’s great.”

Not every visitor receives such a warm welcome, however.

“The bush turkeys,” Roger laughed, “are definitely not our favourite.”

At BlueCare Yurana Retirement Village, Roger’s story is a reminder that some of life’s most meaningful contributions can begin with a seed, a little patience and a willingness to share the fruits of your labour.
