The Terror of an Empty Room

BY RHIANNON D. ELTON

FOR Logan’s creatives, there is nothing more haunting as a room full of chairs and almost nobody sitting in them.

Not because the artist failed. The show is brilliant. The exhibition is beautiful. The workshop is exactly what someone needed.

But nobody knew. Nobody came. And somewhere, an organiser writes, “Maybe Logan doesn’t want this.”

That is the power of an audience.

Your ticket is only part of what you bring through the door. Your presence tells venues, programmers, sponsors and collaborators that there is an appetite for creative things here. A busy room makes the next event easier to justify. An empty one makes it harder.

And Logan isn’t short of things to attend. Logan Arts currently has buckets of exhibitions, workshops, theatre, live music, dance, family events and community programs across venues including Logan Art Gallery, Kingston Butter Factory and Logan Entertainment Centre. Every pub and club and cafe in Logan should have art from local artists, books on consignment, musicians playing, and performers enhancing every memory the space holds.

So, this month’s Creative Corner experiment is simple: turn up to one thing.

Free counts. Twenty minutes counts. Dragging a friend along because you’re nervous absolutely counts. Take a photo, tag the artist or venue, and tell someone what you enjoyed. Hashtag us with #LogansCreativeCorner and #LoganLocal so we know you were there too!

And creatives: make attending easy. Tell us where, when, how much and what to expect. Don’t make people solve a riddle to find your event and be bold enough to share it everywhere!

A thriving creative city is not built only on stages, grants or galleries.

It is built when the chairs are filled.

The more often Logan shows up for creativity, the more creativity will keep showing up for Logan.
